HIVE Portsmouth announces first event

Thursday, May 16, 2019

On Friday 31 May HIVE Portsmouth will be hosting HIVE Spring Festival; an event focusing on all things environmental.

The event, which is during half-term, will include a host of free entertainment perfect for the whole family.

Whether people are looking to upcycle an old outfit, get their bike fixed up or learn the benefits of encouraging wildlife into their garden, there will be something there for the whole family to enjoy.

The programme for the day will be hosted by voluntary, community and statutory organisations based in Portsmouth.

The programme is set to include:

  • Junk percussion workshop
  • Activities and advice on bringing wildlife to your garden, and wildlife in and around the city
  • Plastic ingestion workshop
  • Beeswax wrap workshop
  • Composting workshop
  • Litter pick and recycling masterclass
  • Clothes swap
  • Smoothie bike
  • Bicycle repairs

Cllr Steve Pitt, Deputy Leader of Portsmouth City Council said: “This event demonstrates the work HIVE Portsmouth is doing to unite the voluntary and community sector with statutory bodies. It’s great to see that they are supporting national campaigns and getting this important conversation going.

“The organisations that are involved in this event form a vital part of the support that is available in the city, and I am pleased to see that this will be celebrated and promoted as part of this event.”

The event is inspired by the national Keep Britain Tidy campaign – the Great British Spring Clean – and will be focusing on cutting litter, ending waste, improving public spaces and educating future generations.

Sandy O’Neil, Chief Officer at Citizens Advice Portsmouth and HIVE Portsmouth board member said: “This event is just part of the work HIVE Portsmouth is doing to support voluntary and community organisations in the city. This is all about supporting one another whilst reaching for a shared goal.

“I am excited to be a part of this event and to see the impact that this will make to both the people of Portsmouth and the organisations, big and small, who work tirelessly to make this city the best it can be.”
