Addiction Support

Al Anon

Al-Anon Family Groups provide support to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking, regardless of whether that person is still drinking or not. For some of our members, the wounds still run deep, even if their loved one may no longer be a part of their lives or has died.

Drug and alcohol support service (DASS)

"A free and confidential service for young people up to the age of 25"

What we offer
Face-to-face meetings for young people

A worker from DASS can meet a young person in a variety of places such as their home, school, family hub, youth club or even a coffee shop.

We also run confidential drop-in sessions at the DASS building (55 Kingston Road, Fratton, Portsmouth, PO2 7DP). These are on Monday and Tuesday evenings between 5.30-8pm

Drop-in sessions for parents

The service also offers confidential, supportive drop-in sessions for Portsmouth parents who have concerns or questions. This can be around their child’s substance use, or potential use of drugs or alcohol. These run from DASS building every 3rd Monday of the month between 1pm-3pm.

Training for professionals and schools

DASS provides training to organisations and staff who work with young people to offer substance misuse support. If you are part of a team and would like to arrange for one of our trainers to deliver at your place of work, please reach out for more information: DASS@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

We also offer Drug and Alcohol Awareness training twice a year. You can book on this through learning support team – if you don’t have access to this you can contact us directly at DASS@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

You can learn more about our support for professionals here.

A confidential service
The service is confidential in line with safeguarding policies. This means the worker would only discuss the young person with others if there was a risk of serious harm, and they would normally discuss this with the young person first if possible.

DASS encourages parent involvement, but only where a young person is comfortable with this – it’s not a requirement to access support.

Society of St James Rough Sleeping Hub

We work in close partnership with Portsmouth City Council and other local providers to end homelessness in Portsmouth. Society of St James’ dedicated staff support rough sleepers through our Rough Sleeping Support Service.

This is the first point of contact for many people who have found themselves homeless in Portsmouth. Becoming homeless is a truly frightening experience and many people who come through our door are distressed and confused and simply don’t know where to turn. We aim to make people feel safe and welcome and then we start to build a relationship with them so that we can understand their circumstances and help them to find the support they need.

We provide breakfast, hot drinks, shower and laundry facilities, access to the internet, locker facilities for people to store their belongings and we can help people with clothing.

Our staff are always available to help people to sort out their immediate needs, including:

Sorting our welfare benefits
Registering with a GP
Help with substance misuse problems
Help in finding accommodation
Referring people for supported housing if they have more complex needs
We also offer a therapeutic programme of meaningful activities, including arts and craft workshops, educational sessions to help people improve their literacy and numeracy skills and life skills workshops.

We have regular visiting support from the Recovery Hub, from healthcare professionals and from Housing Options, the city council’s housing team, who can advise on accommodation options.
